Modifying the Handling in a Mazda 6

Friday, June 10th, 2016

Mazda 3 Mazda6 wins award again

The Mazda 6 in itself is a good car. By performing some tuning modifications, its performance can be further enhanced. Mazda 6’s handling can be improved by uprating the braking system through suspension modifications, lowering and weight reduction.

A strut brace is a metal/aluminum/carbon fiber bar that connects the suspension pillars together. Strut braces help to reduce body flexing. This allows for better cornering. The strut braces have to be precision-made. Most of them can be fine-tuned after fitting. A strut brace helps the car to maintain the originally calculated angles in the suspension geometry, no matter now heavy the load is. It also helps to get a better response from the chassis. A strut brace can be easily installed, all you need is an Allen key, a torque wrench, and a socket. Make sure the strut braces fit the struts, and that they will not touch or interfere with the engine or any other elements nearby.

Replacing the wheels can help to improve the Mazda 6’s handling. The lower the wheel weight, the more it will respond while changing direction. This means better handling when turning corners, slowing up or accelerating. Hence, it is better to keep the wheels of the Mazda 6 as light as possible, and not very high. Smaller wheels are lighter and help to increase the acceleration. However, they are not much for looks.

Making the Mazda 6 lighter will help to improve handling and performance. Lighter cars are quicker, and they are much better to handle. Removing the spare wheels can help to reduce weight. Racing seats are much lighter than regular seats. Replacing the glass windows with perspex helps to save weight. Body panels in aluminum, GRP fiberglass or carbon fiber helps to reduce the weight as well. Installing a roll cage will help to remove many metal parts from the car. Alloy wheels can help to reduce the overall weight of the car.

Why the Mazdaspeed Models are Put on Hold

Friday, May 20th, 2016

111117a

Mazda is currently focusing its resources on the development of the 2nd generation SkyActiv range of vehicles. Hence, as of now, the company has put on hold its plan to revive the Mazdaspeed models. According to Masahiro Moro, head of Mazda’s North American operations, their R&D department is currently focused on delivering SkyActiv generation 2. Failure to deliver it now means the company will not have any other derivatives. Once they have delivered the SkyActiv generation 2 vehicles, they will focus on improving the performance of Mazdaspeed models.

In an interview given to Motoring, Moro said that the performance of the first 2 generations of Mazdaspeed3 has been poor. The 1st generation of Mazda3 was equipped with a 2.3L Turbo-4 engine. It provided 263 horsepower and 280 pound-feet torque. The torque steer it generated was very poor, even after the company limited its torque ratio in lower gears. The second generation saw the company revising the gear ratios and ECU.

Moro made it clear that the next generation of Mazdaspeed models would perform far better than its predecessors. He also acknowledged the fact that it had been the 1st generation of Mazdaspeed models (Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata, Mazdaspeed3, and Mazdaspeed6) that helped to spread Mazda’s fun-to-drive message on a global basis.

As of now, Mazda does not have an exact timeline as to the return of its Mazdaspeed models. The company had actually started working on the 3rd generation Mazdaspeed but then it was put on hold in favor of the Koeru Concept.

Cool Features of the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF

Wednesday, May 18th, 2016

 160323b

Following are some of the prominent features of the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF.

Miata RF’s display

Right next to its instrument cluster, Miata RF features a new and unique 4.6-inch color display. The TFT display will show its users information about the vehicle in graphics. For example, when the roof is opening or closing, it will be shown in graphics in the display. The display would also show the fuel level, temperature, and trip computer. The soft-top offers this information only in black and white, and no graphics. Also, the hardtop will feature exclusive Nappa leather. The Soft-top will only be offering regular leather on its Grand Touring model.

Driving position of Miata RF

Miata RF’s cabin is more accommodating for its driver and passenger. There is ample room for tall drivers. The car does not feature a seat height adjuster. Mazda was able to save some weight by removing this feature from Miata RF. This would certainly reflect in its performance. Since it is not a tight fit, the ride would be fun for the driver and the passenger even when the hard-top is closed. The driver would be able to move around comfortably while fiddling with the controls as well.

A retractable hard-top that is very fast

The retractable hard-top has been another challenge for Miata RF’s designers and engineers, according to Mazda. They set out to design and build the fastest retractable hard-top in the industry, and their perseverance and hard work paid off. Miata RF has the fastest retractable hard-top in the automobile industry. All it takes is just 12.5 seconds for the RF’s hard-top to go from fully closed to fully opened. It can do this at speeds up to 6 miles per hour. Mazda engineers tweaked the motor found in the 3rd generation Mazda model’s hard-top to achieve this result.

Mazda3 is Officially the “Best Compact” Car of the Year

Monday, April 4th, 2016

2016-Mazda-3-sedan_6_lg

Good Housekeeping, in collaboration with Car and Driver, has picked the 2016 Mazda3 (Grand Touring) as the ‘Best Compact’ car, for the year 2016. Mazda3 impressed the panel with its style, performance, and family-friendliness. Good Housekeeping is a women’s magazine owned by the Hearst Corporation. Car and Driver is an American automotive enthusiast magazine. The preliminary list included forty-one vehicles across 4 categories, Crossover, Eco, Sedan, and Compact. The Good Housekeeping engineers tested these vehicles for safety features, and performance. The family friendliness, infotainment systems, practicality, storage, design, and the price were also considered for picking the top vehicle.

What set the Mazda3 apart from its competition was its stylish design and the signature Mazda Connect system. According to Robert Davis, senior Vice President of US Operations, MNAO (Mazda North American Operations), the KODO design, and the SkyActiv technologies impressed the judges. He said the company is proud to receive the award. Good Housekeeping and Car and Driver also considered the reliability and the safety of the car while picking it as the winner. The Mazda3 was also awarded the 2015 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The car has a 5-star rating in overall safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as well.

The Mazda3 is one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its class. It is offered with either a SkyActiv-G 2.5L engine or a SkyActiv-G 2.0L engine. Both automatic and manual transmissions (6-speed) are available.

The i-Activ AWD, What you Need to Know

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016

fdfg

The i-Activ AWD (All Wheel Drive) technology from Mazda is a fully automatic intelligent AWD system that provides for fuel economy and helps to make your drive safer. It features sensors that have the capacity to check the conditions of the road about two-hundred times every second. The road condition is determined by watching the wipers (whether it is snowing or raining), monitoring the external temperature gauge (whether the outside temperature is freezing or very hot), and so on. The system can also find out the intention of the driver by monitoring factors like the position of the accelerator (cruising mode or accelerating mode or starting mode), the angle of the steering wheel (straight position or turning position), and so on. The i-Activ has the ability to determine whether the road is slippery or not by comparing the steering torque, with the total power flowing via the steering, and the total acceleration force. The system measures the speed on all the four wheels, and if there is a danger of slippage, it will warn you.

The i-Activ AWD technology helps to reduce friction. It helps to enhance the performance of the vehicle and save fuel. It provides for a better traction on the road. This helps not only to enhance the driving experience but also for a very controlled drive. Driving through the snow or rain is always risky. You may not be able to eliminate the risk factor completely, however, with the help of technologies like the i-Activ AWD, you will be able to minimize that risk a lot.

Mazda Still Considering Diesel Sales in the US

Wednesday, February 17th, 2016

CX5_SKYACTIV_Engine_05

In a recent statement, the Japanese automaker has made it very clear that it has no plans on withdrawing the idea of bringing its diesel engines into the American market. Though there were hindrances to the idea earlier on, Mazda still seems determined.

Diesel vehicles and the technology as a whole have attracted a lot of negative attention in the recent past, especially after the Volkswagen scandal. But, Mazda remains unfazed and is very serious about introducing the diesel SKYACTIV engines to its US customers.

Why is Mazda so adamant about bringing in its diesel engines? Well, according to Senior VP of US Operations, Robert Davis, this is Mazda’s way of moving away from its typical Japanese image and re-establishing itself closer to the European Premium Car segment. In the US, the majority of the diesel sales come from European luxury brands. Mazda aims to cash in on this segment by providing a viable alternative.

The sale of diesel vehicles, even after the VW scandal, has hardly been affected and Mazda’s confidence comes from this fact. Entering the diesel vehicle market will help Mazda differentiate it from the rest of the Japanese automakers, who have completely kept off the idea of bringing diesel alternatives into the US.

Mazda has seen a tremendous demand for its SKYACTIV diesel engines back home in Japan and hopes to create the same effect in the US as well. For now, the only thing delaying the automaker is their temporary inability to strike a balance between performance and complying with US emission standards.

If you are interested about purchasing a diesel Mazda, please provide your contact details to CardinaleWay Mazda. We’ll keep you updated.
