The unique painting technologies of Mazda can reduce VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and CO2 emissions that usually occur during the painting process, significantly.

Aqua-tech Painting process

This is one of the world’s most environmentally-friendly paint systems that is automated. It reduces the VOC emissions by 78% compared to Mazda’s previous oil-based paint system. It does not increase the energy consumption as well. The technology behind Aqua-tech painting system can be categorized into two:

  • A new paint for consolidating the process of painting.
  • New technologies to save energy by increasing the paint process efficiency.

Mazda developed two new top coat paints for the Aqua-tech Paint system, a urethane clear coat, and a water-based color basecoat. The properties of these highly functional top coat paints enable Mazda to consolidate the various processes of the coating as well. The entire process results in reduced energy consumption and low VOC and CO2 emissions. These paints are very durable and reliable and provide the necessary gloss and smoothness for the overall look of the car.

Mazda achieved improved energy saving by air-conditioning the paint booth. It helps to control the maximum absorption volume of water vapor constantly. The system achieves this by monitoring the external temperatures and making the required adjustments.

3-Layer Wet Paint process

The system applies all the 3 layers, the primer, the base, and the clear top coat, while still wet, and then just does a single dying process to finish. This process helps Mazda to reduce CO2 emissions by 15% and VOC emissions by 45% compared to the traditional painting process.

Mazda’s Environmentally-Friendly Tech

Sustainable Business

A ‘Sustainable Zoom-Zoom’ plan was announced by Mazda in the year 2007. It detailed Mazda’s vision for technology development in the long-term. The vision included making high-performance, environmentally-friendly, and attractive cars. Following up on the plan, in the year 2008, Mazda announced that by the year 2015, the company would start selling fuel-efficient cars, worldwide. Technology has made it possible in the recent years to make hybrid and electric vehicles mainstream. Nowadays, the engine, body, transmission, chassis, and other parts of the vehicles are augmented with the help of technology. However, internal combustion engines will still power many vehicles for a very long time.

As of now, Mazda is concentrating on improving the thermal efficiency of engines, and vehicle body weight reduction, all the while adopting a strategy to introduce technology gradually into their vehicle systems, like the brake energy regeneration system, hybrid, and so on. By adopting such a strategy, Mazda plans to make cars that are environmentally-friendly but are not limited by the various environmental needs.

  • SkyActiv technology – The technologies include SkyActiv-G (highly efficient direct injection gasoline engine), SkyActiv-D (clean diesel engine), SkyActiv Drive (fuel-efficient 6-speed automatic transmission), SkyActiv MT (efficient 6-speed manual transmission), SkyActiv Chassis, and SkyActiv Body.
  • Idling Stop Technology – For saving fuel.
  • Brake Energy Regeneration System – Helps to recover kinetic energy and reuse it as power/electricity.
  • Electric vehicle – Electric-powered vehicle.
  • Hydrogen Vehicle – Eco-friendly.
  • Promoting Vehicle Recycling – Using recycled bumper plastics in new vehicle bumpers.
  • Bio-based plastics – Environmental-friendly material.
