Mazda dealerships near San Bernardino have yet another reason to be happy about the Mazda vehicles it sells. A new report released by Consumer Reports revealed Mazda is the most dependable brand. The annual reliability survey saw Mazda beating out automakers who were traditional winners, including rivals like Lexus and Toyota. The consumer organization’s report was announced at a recent online meeting of the Automotive Press Association of Detroit.
Brands that dropped in this year’s survey include Ford and its Lincoln brand, with Lincoln taking the last spot of all 26 brands making an appearance in the study. The electric car manufacturer, Tesla, also failed to score high marks. Trouble with three Tesla models caused the automaker to come in next to last.
According to San Bernardino area Mazda Dealers, Mazda’s appearance at the top of the list represents a first for the Japanese automaker. The Consumer Reports survey was comprised of the organization’s members who owned vehicles from the 2000 to 2020 model years and included more than 300,000 vehicles.
The areas that created the most problems for automakers were related to new technologies, including infotainment systems and transmissions. Jake Fisher, Senior Director of Auto Testing for Consumer Reports, said that some manufacturers were plagued with problems relating to touchscreens, while others had problems with nine-speed, ten-speed and continuously variable transmissions. “A lot of times, new technology gives us trouble,” he stated.
The automotive brands trailing Mazda included Toyota, Lexus, Buick and Honda. Ford and Mini are among the other brands that ended up near the bottom of the list. Buick moved up two spots, which Fisher credited to the brand’s cancelling two unreliable models: the Regal and Regal TourX.
The 2020 Ford Explorer SUV is one of the models that scored the lowest among all brands. Consumer Reports cited the Explorer’s electronic, engine and transmission issues. The Ford Escape also scored below average. According to the organization, Lincoln fell to last place because the brand canceled two reliable models, the Continental and MKZ.
Fisher said that Tesla’s problems included issues with its Model Y SUV. Owners reported the model had body panels that were improperly aligned and mismatched paint. One Tesla owner described finding hair in the Model Y’s paint. Consumer Reports gave the Tesla Model 3 higher marks, saying that owners found it to be reliable. “It’s surprising,” said Fisher. “With all the technology in Teslas, it’s somewhat the basic issues they seem to struggle with.”
According to Consumer Reports, almost half of the new auto models in the survey rated much less than average for reliability.
