Mazda Enjoys Success in Pirelli World Challenge Season

Racecar Driver

Mazda secured 3 class wins, 3 pole positions, and 8 podium finishes in 2016 PWC (Pirelli World Challenge) held at the COTA (Circuit of the Americas) in Austin, Texas. The director of Motorsports Mazda North American Operations, John Doonan, congratulated the winners and thanked the customer teams in the PWC. He said the season is off to a fantastic start, and the battle will be very competitive and fierce all season long. The finale will be held on the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, California. Following are the top Mazda results from the 2016 PWC.

Touring Car A

Elivan Goulart won the 1st race and came in second in the 2nd race. He drove a Mazda MX-5. Eric Powell came in third in the 1st race and earned the pole position in the 2nd race. He also drove Mazda MX-5. Joey Bickers secured the third place in the 2nd race. Mazda MX-5 was his choice of car as well.

Touring Car B

Ted Hough won the first race. Will Rodgers won the second race. Henry Morse scored a pair of third-place finishes. All of them drove the Mazda 2. For Rodgers and Morse, this was the first ever professional race.

Many of the Mazda race cars sported artwork for the AFS (Austin Humane Society). More than $5000 worth of raffle tickets were sold at the race by AHS. The remaining 2016 PWC race schedule is as follows.

  • From May 19 to 22, PWC at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
  • From June 23 to 26, PWC at Road America (Wisconsin).
  • From July 29 to 30, PWC at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
  • From August 12 to 14, PWC at Utah Motorsports Campus.
  • From October 7 to 9, PWC at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (California).

Mazda Raceway Generated $62 Million to Monterey County this Year

This year, over the course of five-races, California State University Monterey Bay found that the five races that were held at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca contributed $62.1 million to the Monterey County economy through direct trip spending of visitors; additionally, they events also generated $5.2 million in state and local taxes. The events included in the study, were: the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix (May 1-3), FIM Superbike World Championship (July 17-19), Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (August 13-16), Pirelli World Challenge (September 11-13), and Porsche Rennsport Reunion V (September 25-27).
