So Someone Took a Miata and Made it Lighter

Until recently, you would have been able to find a customized Miata named ‘Miata-ish’ for sale on Craigslist. While the ad can no longer be found online, the vehicle is most likely now sitting in a car enthusiast’s garage or burning rubber on a race track. Regardless of its current location, it is certainly one of the most unique Miatas ever. The owner of ‘Miata-ish’ simply used what was already there on a 1991 Mazda Miata, stripped off whatever he thought was not necessary, and converted it into sort-of a race-kart-like vehicle. According to the owner, all you need on a car are the basics that hold it together, strip off everything else, and you have a much lighter vehicle that is much more fun to drive.

The ‘Miata-ish’ weighs about 1,500 pounds which makes it friendlier for drifting, burnouts and fast driving. The car is blue, has been lowered and caged and was previously used for amateur racing.

The owner has also uploaded a ‘Miata-ish’ video to YouTube. It shows him working on the car from the beginning. According to the video, the only money that was spent on the car was on the custom-built roll cage.

On a more practical note, according to the owner, the real reason why he started on the project was because he wanted spare Miata parts. The ‘Miata-ish’ weighs more in the front than the rear, however, despite the balance issues, according to the owner, the car was much easier to ‘throw sideways’ than a stock Miata.

The asking price of ‘Miata-ish’ had been $2,000.

The Benefits of a Rotary Wankel Engine

A rotary engine or a Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine. It has an eccentric rotary design. It was conceived by Felix Wankel, a German engineer and a Wankel engine is very light. It has far less moving parts than that of a piston engine of the same caliber and is far simpler than a piston engine as well. Following are the main advantages of a Wankel engine:

  • When compared to a piston engine, a Wankel engine has a far higher power to weight ratio and is approximately 1/3rd its size.
  • A Wankel engine has no reciprocating components.
  • The rpm (revolutions per minute) ratio is significantly higher than that of a piston engine.
  • The engine makes no vibration during operation.
  • A Wankel engine is not prone to engine knock or knocking. (Knocking happens when the fuel/air mixture combustion in the cylinder does not start off correctly upon ignition).
  • Since the engine consists of only a few parts, a Wankel engine is cheaper to manufacture and mass-produce.
  • The engine’s breathing is far superior to that of a piston one since the main shaft rotation is 270 degrees rather than 180 degrees.
  • A Wankel engine has the capacity to provide torques for about 2/3rd of the combustion cycle.
  • The range of speed is wider.
  • Wider octane-rated fuels can be used in a Wankel engine.
  • Sump oil contamination does not happen on some Wankel engines, which means no oil change is required.

Mazda Idling Stop: What you Need to Know

Idling Stop (i-Stop) technology helps to save fuel by turning the engine off when the vehicle is stationary and then turning the engine back on when the vehicle starts to move again. The system helps to improve fuel economy. The stopping and restarting of the engine is barely noticeable. One of the main reasons why this technology failed to gain popularity before it was introduced by Mazda was because of the time it took to restart the engine. Also, the engine used to produce sound and vibration during starting and stopping. Mazda was able to overcome all these difficulties/problems and successfully introduced i-Stop to the market.

Idling Stop technology with gasoline engines

The engine is restarted through combustion. Fuel is injected directly into a cylinder when the engine is stopped. It is then ignited to produce downward piston force. The i-Stop system ensures that the pistons are in the correct position during engine shutdown. It will then identify the first cylinder for injecting the fuel. The fuel is injected and then it is ignited to start the engine again. Even at low rpm, the system will identify the ideal cylinder for sequential ignition. The technology enables the system to restart the engine with the same timing all the time. This provides for optimum fuel economy. The restart actually takes only about 0.35 seconds.

Idling Stop technology with diesel engines

When it comes to diesel engines, the system compresses the air-fuel mixture for a spontaneous combustion. The system needs only a single cycle because of the accurate control of the positions of the pistons. The restart time is approximately 0.40 seconds.

Repairing a Tire with a Repair Kit in a Mazda

A flat tire can be a very frustrating experience. Lucky for you, car maker Mazda has manufactured a temporary puncture repair kit that can help you in the event of an unexpected puncture.

The Mazda Tire Puncture Repair Kit includes a sealant bottle with an injection cap, an air compressor, valve remover, spare valve core, speed limit label, and a printed guide to help you through the process. Note that not all Mazda cars are equipped with this kit.

Before you begin to fix your tire, remember that the sealant bottle can only fix one leak on one tire. Park your car and turn on the hazard warning lights. Take out the sealant bottle and cap. Shake the bottle well, remove the cap, and screw the injection cap onto the bottle. Next, remove the tire’s valve core using the valve remover. Attach the tube of the sealant injection cap to the valve’s stem. Hold the bottle upside-down and transfer all of the sealant into the tire. Remove the injection cap and replace the valve core. Connect the hose of the air compressor to the tire valve and plug in the compressor’s power supply to the vehicle. Put the ignition in ACC and turn the compressor on. Adjust the air pressure to the right level. Once you have reached the right pressure, remove the hose and drive the car for 3 miles or 10 minutes to ensure that the sealant reaches the puncture in the tire. It is important that you do not exceed 50 miles per hour while driving with a sealed tire. Check the tire’s air pressure again.
