Mazda has redesigned it’s CX-9 three-row crossover SUV, and the 2017 model has finally hit dealerships across the country. Among the big changes include a new engine, improved high-quality interiors featuring premium materials, and a considerable shedding of weight. The exterior stylings of 2017 Mazda CX-9 aren’t much different from the older model. It still retains its stylish and eye-catching look.
First off, the new 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. On premium 93-octane fuel, it is capable of producing 250 horsepower. Mazda has termed their unique turbocharger as ‘Dynamic Pressure Turbo’ which, according to them, is able to adjust the degree of exhaust pulsation according to the engine speed. Engine exhaust is routed to the turbocharger turbine at low rpm through smaller ports. Basically, butterfly valves cover part of the exhaust stream is covered by butterfly valves which increases the velocity of exhaust gases that hit the turbocharger. This technology makes it possible for Mazda’s engines to maximize torque at lower rpm. The new inline-4 engine enables the new CX-9 to increase its fuel economy by 20 percent.
On to the weight loss of the CX-9. Equipped with all-wheel drive, the CX-9 is 287 pounds lighter than the older model and 198 pounds lighter when equipped with FWD. This massive shedding of weight has allowed Mazda to improve its NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) by adding 53 pounds of sound insulation and acoustic glass. So the ride is a lot quieter now than before.
