Mazda’s Support For LMP3 Engines Will Not Change

Mazda Engine

LMP3 cars have been successfully introduced in Europe and are set to make a run in the US at the beginning of next year. Mazda continues to be a great supporter of the Prototype Challenge series.

IMSA President Scott Atherton said that the Challenge was beneficial for everyone involved as fans got to witness great racing and giving young talent the platform to excel and progress to higher series like the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship. He also noted that they had taken feedback from competitors and engineers to make the platform a suitable one for prototypes.

John Doonan, Mazda’s Motorsports Directors also commented that Mazda was committed to providing opportunities for young talented crew members and budding drivers. He further said that the event was a great opportunity for those involved to move into Mazda’s Mazda Road to 24 program.

As far as the decision to not make the engines branded, Doonan said that the aim of their program from the beginning was not about badging but rather about development. He said that the program was a “whole new deal” where engineers from different brands could collaborate and excel. As an example of this he mentioned  Mazda engineers working with AER engineers on the prototypes. The event is set to get a significant boost next year thanks to LMP3 engines and Mazda’s support.

Mazda Will Continue To Support LMP3 Engines

Mazda Logo

Mazda’s ‎Director of Motorsports at Mazda North American Operations, John Doonan has expressed his support for Mazda’s engines being used in the prototype cars at the IMSA Prototype Challenge by Mazda series. The engines will remain unbadged throughout the series.

The Prototype Challenge will replace the previous Prototype Lites by Cooper Tires and will be a mix of current and new platforms. The Prototype Challenge will be conducted in seven circuits across the US in a 13-round schedule. Each event will be 45 minutes long and will have one driver per event.

The Mazda engines will be present in the PC2 class,  Elan DP02 cars. The PC1 cars will have the LMP3 from up to 6 manufacturers and identical V8 engines. The LMP3 engine is provided by Mazda but they have chosen not to badge it.

The PC2 class will also be supported by Mazda as part of their scholarship program and the “Mazda Road to 24” program. Doonan says that these programs are great for discovering new talent and named top engineers like Kentock Koch, Mikhail Goikhberg and Tristan Nunez as examples of it’s success.

The new LMP3 mechanism is set to increase the car count of the challenge. It is currently at 20 with new and existing teams planning to order more products for next year.

How Mazda’s SkyActiv Technology Changed The Industry

Mazda Engine

Much to the burden of auto manufacturers, SkyActiv has proven that CAFE standards can be reached. Many automakers have a problem with the standards and argue that consumers are not willing to spend more for the sake of fuel economy. Thus, they believe that creating harsher standards will not help the industry and might lead to loss of jobs throughout.

A double-edged sword

Experts note that SkyActiv is a double-edged sword – it has benefits but it also has it’s downfalls. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers have argued that CAFE standards judge them unfairly. However, clean climate campaigners have pointed Mazda’s success and note that other manufacturers are slowly adapting technologies to help with fuel economy. However, the problem is that unlike Mazda, other manufacturers offer a variety of cars from SUVs to trucks. Achieving fuel economy across all these classes involves significant investment and time.

Mazda manufacturers sedans mostly and it is easier for them to adapt SkyActiv engines throughout their fleet. However, when it comes to buying trends, Mazda is disadvantaged as recent reports suggest that consumers are buying bigger cars. But Mazda’s Director of Government and Public Affairs, Daniel Ryan, has emphasized that their main aim is to reach all Mazda buyers and provide them with the benefits of SkyActiv without any hassle.

The Mazda CX-9 Provides Benefits For The Entire Mazda Lineup

CX9

The CX-9’s turbocharged Skyactiv engine has been a favorite among Mazda’s engineers. Since the idea’s inception and introduction in production, the team has dabbled with the idea of putting it in other vehicles. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that when it came to swapping engines, the CX-9’s was the obvious choice.

The CX-5 can surely take a few pointers from the CX-9. But there’s more help pouring in. Mazda 6’s new diesel 2.2L SkyActiv-D engine is also being eyed by the crossover.

When it comes to spilling the beans on its marvelous turbo engine or its introduction in future lineups, Mazda is tight-lipped. But it is actively looking to push its hybrids into the American market. Strict regulations concerning safety and design have eluded the coveted market for over 2 years.

It is more likely that if the turbo engine would find its way into another model, it would be the Mazda 6. Don’t discount the chance that the CX-5 will share the same, going by market observations.

There is a possibility of Mazda bringing the turbo-four engine crossover into the market by next year, which is quite a short wait. If you are looking for the SkyActiv-D engine then it could get longer because there isn’t any talk from the makers to introduce it sooner than 2018.

Until you hear an official announcement from the carmaker, the future of this powertrain can only be speculated. Catch up on Mazda’s latest news stories, technologies, and lineups by paying a visit to CardinaleWay Mazda Corona.

What The Mazda CX-9 Brings To The Table

CX9

In all the years of Mazda’s history, there hasn’t been a time when one of its models wasn’t hot property. The Japanese carmaker has always been in the news for its path-breaking technology or superior design. Over the years, it has added versatility to its portfolio by introducing crossover compacts and hybrid models.

When Mazda introduced the CX-9, automakers and car fanatics the world over took notice. What fascinated them was the CX-9’s 2.5L turbo-four engine. Its 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft torque is enough to pull buyers in the thousands. The engine can also be used in other Mazda models such as the 3, 6, and CX-5 because they are all products of the same make.

It is highly unlikely that the engine will find itself under the hood of a Mazda 3 or 6 in the near future, primarily because the MazdaSpeed program has been put on hiatus. Therefore, what’s left is the CX-5. There isn’t much tweaking required from the engine of the CX-9, just a little fine-tuning of the output. It will enable the crossover to handle beautifully and ensure a far smoother ride.

Mazda’s average efficiency can also experience a lift which will allow the automaker to include it in its brand new technology offering – the SkyActiv 2. With this new generation of SkyActiv engines, Mazda hopes to take a step forward in delivering powerful machines. It is only a matter of time when such a car will actually see the light of day.

Mazda’s Latest, the MX-5 RF, Is a Pleasure to Behold

MX5 RF

They say beauty is subjective, but they haven’t a clue about the Mazda MX-5 RF’s beauty. It’s a smart, stylish, and sophisticated coupe which boasts a refined design thanks in large to its Targa-style roof. At times, it’s hard to imagine such an automobile is available for £21,000 (starting price) because it sure looks like a pretty expensive piece of art.

Mazda uses a 3-coat paint structure on its automobiles which provides a lovely sheen on illumination and gives it a shiny metallic finish. The model showcased at the New York Auto Show was Machine Gray with a metallic finish. Nappa leather interiors are splashed in deep red. Red interiors are a rarity for Miata because not since the 1993 LE special-edition model has the color been used.

The colors, both exterior and interior, adhere to the KODO design philosophy of transforming energy into motion. It combines the strength and precision of the machine into a beautiful package.

By incorporating the retractable fastback, Mazda has made sure you have a sporty, lightweight coupe which looks like it would turn heads when you are cruising on the highway. The occasional rush of air you’ll experience while riding with its top down is another reason for the coupe’s popularity.

It’s safe to say the MX-5 RF is the most attractive Miata in the series, making it a cool automobile to own. Get in touch with the experts at CardinaleWay Mazda Corona to know more about the MX-5 RF.

Mazda’s Revolutionary Approach to Clean Diesel Technology – Part III

Diesel Mazda

Mazda engineers incorporated a variable valve lift mechanism into the exhaust valve control, and for variable injection patterns, they used multi-hole piezo injectors. This enabled the engine to warm up more quickly during a cold start because the system channeled the hot exhaust gases immediately back  into the cylinders. The low compression ratio of the SkyActiv-D engine enabled the Mazda engineers to make it lighter since the block had to cope with lesser physical stress. The pistons in the engine alone are 25% lighter. Also, Mazda claims an improved 20% fuel economy rate.

Mazda has employed twin sequential turbochargers for its 2.2L SkyActiv-D engine to boost the outputs. The result, 172 hp and 309 ft lb. In this setup, what essentially happens is that the turbo that is smaller helps to provide a faster response at low engine speeds, and at higher revs, the bigger unit will kick in to provide that intense boosting required.

According to the media, who were given a ‘teaser trailer’ ahead of the Mazda 6 and CX-5 launch last week in Malaysia, the CX-5, at idle, is anything but the petrol variant that has that mellow idle tone and the subdued manner while idle. However, once the acceleration is given a chance, the CX-5 reveals the full extent of the diesel innovations of Mazda. At 2000 rpm, 309 ft lb comes full circle. The CX-5 starts to accelerate harder from 3500 rpm. The shifting, both up and down, is smooth, and decisive.

Mazda’s Revolutionary Approach to Clean Diesel Technology – Part I

Diesel Mazda

New generation turbodiesel engines are often praised as feasible alternatives to hybrids as a source of clean energy. There is indeed a lot to like, and accept, in a diesel engine’s inherent abilities to deliver a far superior acceleration than a petrol equivalent while consuming only less fuel. Mazda currently have a long line of both diesel and petrol-fuelled 4-cylinder engines integrated with the company’s SkyActiv technologies that are widely acclaimed for their ability to provide superior fuel economy in a wide range of conditions, in the real world. A good percentage of Mazda’s passenger car line-up in the market are equipped with its new generation SkyActiv technologies-integrated petrol engines. The company has always been a little cautious in releasing its passenger cars fitted with their diesel engines. However, for the past couple of years, Mazda has been conducting trials in the real world with demo units fitted with their SkyActiv technologies-integrated diesel engines. Now it looks like the company is confident enough about their diesel engines. This year, Mazda is expected to launch at least 4 diesel-powered models, the CX-3, CX-5, Mazda 2, and Mazda 6. The Mazda 6 and CX-5 will be powered by a 2.2L SkyActiv-D diesel engine, and the Mazda 2 and CX-3 will be powered by a 1.5L SkyActiv-D diesel engine.

Last week, in Malaysia, Mazda launched the Mazda 6 and CX-5, and thus started its much-anticipated diesel offensive. The 2.2L SkyActiv-D diesel engine has the capacity to deliver 172 HP @ 4500 rpm and 309 ft lb @ 2000 rpm. The CX-5 was assembled at Mazda’s Malaysian assembly facilities, and the Mazda 6, at Japan.

When Will G- Vectoring Reach the Miata?

2016-Mazda-MX-5-Miata-roadster_lg

The latest Mazda cars are rolled out with the smart G-vectoring system while the inclusion of the same in the sports car MX-5 is still unclear. According to the Mazda heads, the delay in adoption of G-vectoring in Miata is because of the fact that the MX-5 is not among the top priority list of upgrades yet. Adding to the same, it was also said that every time the company discovered a new technology, it was immediately rolled out without thinking too much into the car it will be incorporated into- the main aim here was to make the latest technology available as and when it was refined.

The GVC technology is another addition to the long list of Mazda patents. The factor that makes the GVC technology work is the SkyActiv framework of the Mazda cars. Although, the MX-5 seems to be the ideal candidate for this technology, given the present situation this may not be of utmost importance, for now.

The evolution of GVC was directed towards presenting the feeling of the MX-5 drive in terms of precision and directness to other cars whose center of gravity and weight is below optima. Incorporation of GVC will make driving on bad and uneven roads safer and more pleasurable. GVC is also set to sort out complaints regarding the CX-3’s vertical body movement. The best aspect of the G-Vectoring is that it can be tuned to fit the needs of regional road conditions.

The CX-9 is the Most Anticipated Car From Mazda- Here’s Why- Part 2

CX9

A car is as good as its engine and interior comforts. The CX-9 is the most awaited car from the Mazda stable for its powerful engine. The all new boosted 2.5L quadra cylinder turbo petrol engine has a monster power output of 2000rpm at 420lb-ft torque propelling the six speed automatic transmission to hit high speeds with ease. There is no drag experienced while accelerating and the car is highly fuel efficient.

Speaking of drive conditions, the car fared exceptionally well when tested on wet roads. Bumps in the road were absorbed by the efficient shock absorbers and little or no overthrow was felt within the cabin.

Although the car is not small, parking and maneuvering it in tight spots does not seem like an impossible task thanks to the parking sensors and rear view cameras. The traction is improved with the All-wheel drive owing to the inclusion of larger tires of 20 inches.

The Mazda offers a three years warranty for unlimited kilometers post which service is required once a year or on completion of 10,000 kilometers, whichever comes first.

In the safety department, all variants come with driver air bags, side and rear air bags, 4 wheel disc and drum brakes, brake assist system, child safety locks, blind spot monitoring, traction control and lane departure warning.

The car is a steal deal for families looking at buying SUV for the space it offers, safety features and performance, all of which is available in the base Sport variant.
