Twin Turbochargers And Electric Supercharger: Mazda’s Latest Patent

Monday, September 18th, 2017

As the saying goes in Alice In Wonderland, “Curiouser and curiouser,” which aptly describes our reaction to news of Mazda’s latest patent filing.  The patent is for a triple-charged engine.  Is this another engine breakthrough for Mazda?  What future plans does Mazda have in store utilizing a twin engine configuration with an electric supercharger?  CardinaleWay Mazda Corona, your favorite Corona dealership, is just as intrigued as everyone else. we can hardly wait to see what Mazda has up its sleeve!

How A Triple-Charged Engine Works

Mazda’s design for a triple-charged engine is comprised of twin turbocharged engines with an electric supercharger.  In theory, this triple combination engine system works when the electric supercharger kickstarts the engine.  In response, this revs up the dual turbochargers for a significant burst of horsepower.  Typically, you would envision a triple-charged engine in a rear-wheel drive vehicle.

The Million Dollar Question

A patent for the triple-charged engine does not necessarily mean that Mazda has a concept car on the drawing board to accommodate the new engine design. However, it begs the million dollar question circulating in the auto industry… does Mazda plan to utilize this triple-charged engine in the near future?  It’s quite possible that this type of triple-charged engine would be well-suited for an RX-8 successor.

The Impact of The New Toyota-Mazda Plant in the U.S.

Thursday, August 24th, 2017

On the heels of the surprise announcement that Toyota and Mazda plan to jointly build a $1.6 billion manufacturing plant in the United States, we’re delving deeper into the long-range implications.  Besides providing a shot in the arm to the U.S. economy and jobs growth, what’s in it for the two Japanese automakers?  Specifically, Mazda who is about 1/7th the size of giant auto manufacturer Toyota.  CardinaleWay Mazda in Corona, your #1 Corona Dealership, is optimistic that this marriage between strange bedfellows has the potential to produce great things for Mazda.

What Mazda Stands To Gain

While the strategic hunt for the location of the new Toyota-Mazda plant heats up, with at least a dozen states vying for bragging rights, let’s examine what could result from the alliance between the Japanese auto manufacturers.  First, there’s substantial job growth, with at least 4,000 jobs promised by the creation of the new plant.  Then, there’s the real possibility of shared technology between Toyota and Mazda.  This is an area where Mazda can definitely benefit with regards to electric vehicle (EV) development, as Toyota is ahead of the game.  Mazda, on the other hand, lags behind on EV development, due to their insistence that combustion engines hold promise for the future.  It makes sense that they will team up and design EVs of the future.

Both automakers bought a token of shares from each other to solidify their “marriage of convenience.”  On paper, it looks like the start of a beautiful collaboration.  While Toyota is expected to initially manufacturer Corollas, their smaller sedan, Mazda has indicated they’ll manufacturer a yet-unnamed crossover SUV at the new plant.  It remains to be seen if EVs may also be manufactured at the Toyota-Mazda facility in the long run, but anything’s possible.
