In the mid-1960s Mazda had a huge problem. How on earth could it follow the million-selling Carol sedan? The competition had finally caught up with the one class leader and the fledging car maker was in danger of becoming a one-hit wonder. Mazda had to come up with something truly special. Luckily, it did what it always did – think different and dig deep into its well of engineering talent. It teamed up with design house Bertone the all-new Luce was the result. Stunning to look at, but the true beauty lay beneath its Latin lines. It was nothing less than state-of-the-art. The 1500 cc, for example, was the first in its class to boast a punchy single overhead cam engine that offered an unbeatable 78 hp and a top speed of well over 90 MPH and the ability to carry six passengers in comfort.
